Everton have landed Nigerian International Viktor Obinna on loan from Serie A Champions Inter Milan, who have decided to loan the striker to the Merseyside club immediately after signing Obinna from Chievo.
21-year-old Obinna had been at Chievo since 2005, with the Nerazzurri helping to finance his move to Chievo from Porto Alegre in exchange for a percentage of the forward’s contract.
Obinna had been linked with a host of clubs in Italy, with AS Roma and Napoli joining the chase with Inter to sign Obinna, who helped Nigeria to the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where they lost to Argentina in the final.
Inter were understood to have first refusal on the Nigerian and decided to sign the highly rated youngster only to let him leave the San Siro on loan to Goodison Park, with a view to making Obinna’s transfer to the Premier League permanent next summer.
Despite helping Chievo achieve promotion to Serie A last season Obinna had already asked to leave the Mussi Volanti, with the forward now getting his wish.
“I'm looking forward to a brighter future - to go and play for an important club, maybe in the European Champions League,” Obinna told BBC Sport.
“I wanted to leave them last season, they begged me, they said that I should stay so that I will come back to Serie A and then I can leave.
“They gave me their word, so they have to fulfil their promise.”
West Ham United were also reportedly interested in signing Obinna on loan, but have lost out to the Toffees. With Everton boss David Moyes happy to bring in a new face to Goodison Park after a difficult summer attracting transfer targets.
