Middlesbrough’s Brazilian International striker Alfonso Alves is aiming to walk away with the Golden Shoe at the end of his first full Premier League campaign, having opened his account against Stoke City for his first of the season.
27-year-old Alves was prolific in the Eredivisie for Heerenveen, with the Brazilian averaging more than a goal a game for the Dutch side before his £12.7million transfer to the Riverside Stadium in January.
However the forward does appreciate that goals might be harder to come by in the Premiership with Boro, but insists he will be competing for the Golden Shoe come the end of the season.
Alves told the club's official website: “The goal I scored against Stoke City on Saturday was my first in this season.
“That's just the start. I am setting my targets high.
“I will be fighting to win the Golden Shoe this season. I almost won it when I played in Holland.
“The only reason I missed out was that UEFA doesn't rank goals scored in the Dutch Eredivisie as highly as those scored in some other European leagues.
“My goals are worth more here in England, and I feel I can snatch the prize this season.”
