Portuguese club Benfica are adamant that they will not move on their valuation of Olympic Gold medallist Angel Di Maria, with Premier League side Chelsea heavily linked with the Argentine along with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
20-year-old winger Di Maria scored the winning goal for Argentina at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has made 36 appearances for the Eagles since his transfer from Rosario Central in 2007, with the winger revealing recently that he would be open to a move in the January transfer window.
Di Maria said : “I know that many clubs have been interested in me, but at the moment I am only thinking about Benfica and Argentina. I will stay here until December and then we will see.
“I do not have a preference as to where I would like to go, but my dream is to play in one of the great leagues.”
However, should Di Maria decide to leave Benfica in January for Stamford Bridge, the Bernabeu or the San Siro he would not come cheap. With directors at Benfica insisting that the Argentine International will not be sold for anything less than their £24million (€30m) asking price.
“The value of Di Maria in the market is 30million euros (£24million) and that will not change,” Benfica's directors said in a statement.
Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is a known admirer of the Argentine International from his time as the Portugal coach, which could give the Blues the edge in bringing the young star to the Premiership rather than La Liga or Serie A, as long as the West London club are prepared to meet the valuation of the young winger.
