Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has claimed that it would be a shock if former St James’ Park legend Alan Shearer took up the vacant manager’s post at United, with Shepherd believing that former England International Shearer would turn down any offer of the Toon hot seat.
38-year-old Shearer would definitely be the first choice of the Toon faithful, with executive director Dennis Wise and Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager Gus Poyet also being linked to the post.
However, the appointment of Wise would not go do well with the fans at St James’ Park, after his involvement in the resignation of Keegan on Thursday, who walked away from Newcastle after citing the interference of the board in transfer dealings.
Even if Newcastle were to ask Shearer, who spent 10 years at the Magpies and is their record goal scorer to take the manager’s job. Shepherd believes his reaction would be the same as when he rejected the offer before Keegan was appointed in January of this year.
“I’d be very surprised if Alan Shearer took the job,” Shepherd told The Daily Mail.
‘I just think he wants to give it a bit longer before he goes into management.”
Shepherd also voiced his understanding of the fans frustration at losing Keegan, with the former chairman insisting that Keegan was the right man for the job if he was allowed to do things his way.
“When I was there with Kevin we had a simple strategy. Kevin identified the players and we tried to get the money to buy them.
“I don’t know what’s happening with Mike’s structure, whether it’s fallen apart, but I worked with Kevin for five years and he was fantastic.”
