Everton Boss Moyes: I Could Have Quit, But Robson's Words Inspired Me

Everton manager David Moyes has revealed how he was close to quitting the Toffees this summer after six-and-a-half years at the Merseyside club, but an inspirational speech by former England boss Bobby Robson persuaded the Scot that he still had a job to do at Everton.

Moyes arrived on the blue half of Merseyside in 2002 after a successful period in charge of Championship club Preston North End and has built good foundations at Goodison Park guiding them to two 5th place finishes in the Premier League.

However, despite his success at Everton, Moyes had started to question if he had maybe been at the Toffees too long, but Robson’s speech about his time in charge of Ipswich Town changed the Scotsman perspective.

“I went to a dinner in the middle of July for Bobby Robson - it was a tribute evening from the League Managers' Association,”said Moyes.

“Bobby got up to speak about his time in management and said he had been at Ipswich Town for more than 12 years. Then he mentioned that Brian Clough was with Nottingham Forest for 13.

“And it made me think how lucky I was to have been at Everton for six-and-a-half years in a period when managers may get one or two years in a job.

“It had been going through my head that to be at one club for six-and-a-half years was a long time, possibly too long.

“But what Bobby said made me think the opposite - that, in fact, it's not long enough and I still have a job to do. It's a dream and he inspired with me with his words.”
