Kevin Keegan is reportedly suing Newcastle United for £9million in damages for unfair dismissal following his decision to quit the Magpies for a second time as manager in October, according to The Evening Standard.
Former England boss Keegan made a dramatic return to Tyneside in January to take up the reigns at St James’ Park again after almost three years out of football since standing down as Manchester City manager in 2005.
However, all was not well behind the scenes at Newcastle, which resulted in Keegan quitting last month in acrimonious circumstances. With Keegan concerned by the role of director of football Dennis Wise, who Keegan claimed made his position untenable at the North East club.
This dispute is now set to head to the courts to be resolved, with Keegan reportedly claiming £9million in compensation, citing that the interference of Wise in transfers broke the terms of his own agreement at St James’ Park.
Keegan is demanding payment in full of the remaining three-and-a-half years of his deal at the Magpies worth around £9million. With the former Liverpool and SV Hamburg player, claiming that he was promised full control of transfers by owner Mike Ashley when he agreed to take the job at Newcastle.
The signing of Deportivo La Coruna striker Xisco on transfer deadline day is understood to have been the final straw for Keegan, with it believed that Keegan had no knowledge of the Spaniard’s imminent arrival at Newcastle on deadline day.
Newcastle United have yet to comment on whether Keegan has filed legal proceedings against them or if they will issue a counter-claim if he has.
