Kevin Keegan is open to a sensational return to Newcastle United, after a South African consortium that tabled an official bid for the North East Club wanting Keegan to take the helm at St James’ Park once again.
The consortium have offered Magpies owner Mike Ashley £280million for Newcastle and are the only interested party to have made an offer to Ashley, despite it being reported that there are as many as seven groups interested in the Premier League club.
However, Ashley has been reported as wanting £480million for the club he bought 16 months ago, which would net the sports magnate a cool profit on the £240million he has invested in Newcastle, with Ashley also insisting that while he is keen to sell he will not be rushed into a fire sale.
Should Ashley’s stance change and he decides that a quick sale is best for all parties. Then Keegan could start his third spell in charge of United this month, with a source close to the former England and Manchester City manager confirming that Keegan is ready to continue his love affair with the Toon.
The source close to Keegan said: “Kevin has had a great break, is feeling refreshed and wants to return.
“He knows what it would mean for all the fans and he wants a fresh crack at the club he loves.
“Of course, new owners have to come in but he has been pleased to see his name mentioned by prospective buyers.
“He is now just waiting to see what happens with things.”
Financiers Seymour Pierce, who are overlooking the sale for Ashley are hoping to have a buyer in place by the end of the week, with a Nigerian group headed by British businessman Chris Nathaniel reportedly also interested in the Premiership club.
