Liverpool Boss Benitez Sweating On Keane, Gerrard & Alonso Fitness For Chelsea Clash

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has revealed that striker Robbie Keane, who scored against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League clash on Wednesday along with captain Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso are all struggling to overcome injuries in time for the crucial Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

Benitez had to replace all three players in the 1-1 draw against Atletico at the Vicente Calderon and will now have to wait and see if the trio will be fit enough to take the field against the Blues at Stamford Bridge in the top of the table Premiership clash. With Benitez eager to have all three players at his disposal as the Reds look to end Chelsea’s unbeaten league run at home, which stretches back to 2004.

Irish International Keane was replaced early in the second half by Dirk Kuyt with a slight groin strain, while EURO 2008 winner Alonso suffered a knee injury and Gerrard was taken off suffering with fatigue.

Benitez said: “The three players had some problems.

“Keane and Gerrard and Alonso were tired, so we were trying to use players with fresh legs. We were trying to protect all of them by substituting them.

“I don't think they are serious. We will have to wait and see tomorrow.

“It was a little bit of a muscle problem for Robbie. Gerrard is okay. He was really tired and Alonso has a knock on his knee. "We need to check with Keane. He will see the doctor.”
