Argentine International Lionel Messi has revealed that he believes Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool team are favourites to win the Champions League, with the Barcelona superstar hailing the quality of Reds players Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard and countryman Javier Mascherano.
The Merseyside club are top of their qualifying group and are also setting the early pace in the Premiership, with Liverpool unbeaten in all competitions this season as they go into their Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Liverpool face Torres’ former club Atletico Madrid next in the Champions League at Anfield next week, with 21-year-old playmaker Messi, convinced that Benitez will take Liverpool all the way to the final in Rome at the very least.
“If I had to choose anyone to win the Champions League then it would be Liverpool,” said Messi.
“They have great players like Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Javier Mascherano, and they are difficult to play against.
“Maybe there are teams that play better football but I can see them getting to the final in Rome.”
