Chelsea defender John Terry hailed the work of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium and believes that the Frenchman’s youth policy can only benefit English football.
Wenger has been criticised in the past for not fielding any or very few home grown players at the Emirates, but fielded no fewer than six English youngsters in the side, who had an average age of 19, destroyed Championship side Sheffield United 6-0 in the Carling Cup. A game which Terry saw.
While England International Terry praises the work of Wenger he also has revealed that the Blues also have a crop of English youngsters coming through at Stamford Bridge, with the central defender pointing out that they beat Arsenal recently.
The England captain said: “I’ve been very encouraged by seeing that game and it’s great for English football.
“But it’s not just Arsenal. Our reserves at Chelsea, with a lot of English players, went to Arsenal recently and beat them.
“At our place I love it when the young English guys come over and make a big impact in training.
“These guys don’t stay in their shell, they play their game.
“The talent is out there and Mr Wenger has the confidence to give them a chance.
"It’s a great advert for English football and good news for England.”
The Gunners have introduced a policy of blooding young players in the Carling Cup at the North London club in recent years, which has up until now produced mainly foreign stars like Gael Clichy and Denilson. However, the next batch of young talent at the Emirates has a predominately English flavour to it.
