Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is upbeat that his captain England International Steven gerrard will be fit in time to face Manchester United in 10 days.
Gerrard picked up a groin injury last week, which resulted in him missing the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa at the weekend, but despite having to undergo surgery, Benitez is confident that Gerrard will be available to lead the Reds out against United at Anfield on September 13th.
Benitez revealed that the 28-year-old had resumed light training and that he should be ‘ready soon’.
“Steven is okay," he told the club's website. "He's started with bicycle work and will start jogging, so I think he will be ready soon.”
However, Liverpool will be without Fernando Torres for the clash with United after the EURO 2008 winner tore a hamstring in the game with the Villans.
Benitez went on to claim that with Olympic Gold medallist Javier Masherano back along with Ryan Babel, the Reds would improve on their early season performances in the Premier League.
“Javier Mascherano, Lucas (Leiva) and (Ryan) Babel arrived late and I am sure that in a few weeks' time it will be better,’ he added.
“We need to have better possession and work on having a higher tempo.”
