Petrov To Play His Way To New Deal At Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov is in line for a new contract at Villa Park if he can carry on the form he has shown in the Villans first three Premier League games.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill, who signed Petrov from his former club Celtic in 2006 for an initial £6.5million fee, has said that the Bulgarian International is now producing the type of form, which will earn him a new deal with the Midlands team.

Petrov has had a slow start to his Villa career, with the 29-year-old failing to make an impact in his first season in the Premiership. However, his form picked up towards the end of the last campaign and the midfielder was an integral part of O’Neill’s side, which qualified for the UEFA Cup through the Intertoto Cup.

The Bulgarian’s present deal is due to run out in 2010, but O’Neill is sure he will be rewarded with a new contract if he continues to perform.

O'Neill told the Birmingham Mail: “Petrov was starting to do it towards the back end of last season and the performances that he has put in this season have to be the norm for him.

“I think he has done great. The chairman has made it clear he will definitely sort out players who are doing it.”
