Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is sweating on the completion of the signing of Albert Riera from Espanyol, with the transfer deadline looming. A signing the Anfield boss thinks will add a whole new dimension to his Reds side.
Benitez was hoping that the transfer of the Spanish International would be completed yesterday, but even though an £8million (€9.8m) fee has been agreed and the left-winger has passed a medical with the Merseyside club. There is still apparently some paperwork to be completed, but Benitez is assured that the deal is all but done.
Benitez said: “The deal for Riera is nearly done. I have confidence that it will. It can improve us and give us a bit of balance."
One new development is that Republic of Ireland International Steve Finnan could be included in the deal, with the Spanish club expressing an interest in the right-back.
Which could represent a way out of Anfield for the Irishman, having been told by Benitez that he did not figure in his plans for this Premiership season.
