Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly the latest Premier League club to be the subject of a takeover by a billionaire owner, with reports of a proposed takeover of the North London side by an Asian investor.
Super agent Pini Zahavi has been in discussions with the Asian investor with regards to a possible takeover of Spurs, which could be worth up to £400million, according to The Observer.
However, it is understood that Zahavi, who played a major role in the Roman Abramovic takeover of Chelsea in 2003 has not been instructed by Tottenham, but just by the interested party at this stage. With Zahavi, known as the ‘go-to’ man in brokering this type of deal.
A source told the Observer: “The discussions are at a preliminary stage, but the investor is a billionaire and views Spurs as perfect because of the profile of the club and the fact that they are in London. This last point is very important."
The majority shareholder at the Premiership side is Enic, who own more than 80% of Spurs, but success on the pitch has been scarce at White Hart Lane, with chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Damien Comoli both coming under fire for mistakes in the transfer market.
Any bid for the Carling Cup holders would have to be submitted to the shareholders as the club is a PLC, a Tottenham spokesman confirmed, while also confirming that as of yet there had been no firm offer for Spurs when asked.
The Tottenham spokesman said: “No, but as a PLC if any bid is submitted then it has to be put to our shareholders.”
