England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce is setting up a club versus country row over Arsenal’s young star Theo Walcott by insisting that he wants to take the young striker to the European Under-21 Championship finals next summer, despite Gunners manager Arsene Wenger’s concerns.
19-year-old Walcott, who is already a full England International and regular starter for Arsenal in the Premier League is wanted in the squad by Pearce for the finals next summer. Should England beat Wales in a play-off and qualify for the tournament.
"I want Theo to represent the under-21 side next summer and I cannot see any problem," said Pearce.
"I know Theo and he will want to come and play for me if we qualify. He has played a big part in getting us this far.
“The experience would benefit him and might just tip the scales in us winning the tournament."
Wenger is worried that his young starlet could face burnout by playing in the summer tournament, with it more than likely that Walcott will be involved in the full England squad for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa should they qualify.
