Carr Set For Shock Newcastle Return?

Interim Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear is considering re-signing former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland defender Stephen Carr to ease the pressure on his squad at St James’ Park.

32-year-old Carr was released from Newcastle by former boss Kevin Keegan at the end of last season, having only made 78 appearances for the Magpies in an injury hit four years at the North East side.

However, Kinnear has revealed that Carr is an option he is looking at as the former Nottingham Forest manager looks at ways to improve a Toon side that is second from bottom in the Premier League.

Kinnear told the Chronicle: “We are looking at his position, but a lot will depend on his fitness.

‘We are short at both right and left-back, and it is not fair asking young boys who are really central defenders to play there. When that happens they look what they are - central defenders playing as full- backs.

“Stephen Carr is available and he is an experienced full- back, so we will just have to wait and see.”
