Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey has fired a warning shot to Sunday’s Premier League opponents Chelsea, with the former Reading player promising the Blues that the Villans will give Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side a test when they visit Stamford Bridge.
Villa stand just a point behind Chelsea in the Premiership, with Martin O’Neill’s team having a superb start to the campaign, which has put them into the top four early on in the season.
27-year-old Shorey joined the Midlands club in the summer and feels that Villa can end Chelsea’s unbeaten home run in the Premier League, which stretches back four and a half years to the 2003/04 season.
Chelsea will be without Portuguese pair Deco and Ricardo Carvalho along with Michael Essien and Didier Drogba for the visit of Villa, with Shorey insisting that Aston Villa have nothing to fear as they go to the Premiership leaders on the back of three straight league wins.
Shorey said; “We are confident - even if they didn’t have injuries we would be confident of getting a result. We know they are a good team but we are playing well at the minute.
“Going forward we are a force. We will try and keep it tight at the back and hopefully we will give them a right good game.
“They are one of the best teams in the world. They show that week-in, week-out but we know that as a team we are getting better and come Sunday we are looking to give them a test.
“Drogba is a focal point for them. But you lose Drogba and Nicolas Anelka comes in, or someone else. They will have other players who can come in and do well.
“To be going there with people even talking about an upset just shows how far we have come.”
