City Clinch Gold Medal Signing With Johnson Set To Follow

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has received a double boost, with the completion of the transfer of Argentine Gold medallist Pablo Zabaleta from Espanyol and the news that midfielder Michael Johnson is set to end speculation about his City future and sign a new-deal within the next 24 hours.

City have confirmed the signing on Sunday of Argentine International defender Zabaleta for a undisclosed fee, with the right-back committing himself to the Eastlands Stadium until 2013 after passing a medical.

Hughes said in a statement on www.mcfc.co.uk: “He's young and a winner, with an Olympic gold medal to prove that, but more so he will provide us with great balance in the side.”

Zabaleta added: “I am very happy to come here and play in the Premier League. Playing in England has been a lifelong dream which has finally come true by moving to City.

“I'd met him (Mark Hughes) previously and was really impressed with him, but having talked to him about Manchester City I had to come here and be part of his plans.

“I'm very confident of helping the first team to achieve their goals for the season and after walking around the stadium I can't wait to play in front of the City fans there. It is very impressive.”

Hughes is also delighted to announce that England Under-21 midfielder Johnson is set to sign a new deal, having initially refusing the contract on offer it appears that Hughes has won the young player round with an improved offer.

“Michael will put pen-to-paper over the next 24 hours,” Hughes told the Sunday Mirror.

“We are delighted because he has a fantastic future and his decision to commit his future to this club is another example of the progress we are now making.”
