Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has revealed that there have been offers from the England to take him back to the Premier League, but has also revealed that he is happy playing in La Liga for the time being.
Former Manchester United forward Forlan has been a target for former team-mate Roy Keane, now manager at Sunderland, who had been keen to bring the Uruguayan International to the Stadium of Light.
The other Premiership club reportedly interested in the 29-year-old is Tottenham Hotspur, who are rumoured to have had an offer of £22million (€27.3m) turned down by the Rojiblancos, according to the Spanish press. With Spurs boss Juande Ramos a huge fan of Forlan and keen to bring the prolific front-man to White Hart Lane.
Now that Atletico are through to the group stages of the Champions League for the first time in 11 years, Forlan has decided that his future is at the Vicente Calderon.
“For sure I received offers from The Premier League to return this season, but neither am I interested in the adventure, nor are Atletico Madrid thinking of selling me,” Forlan told setantasports.com.
“I’m grateful to the clubs for those offers but today I’m focused on Atletico Madrid and on doing something good in the Champions League.
“The preliminary round victory against Schalke is a massive moral boost and this European season can be wonderful.
“I wasn’t so lucky during my spell at Manchester United because I didn’t have many opportunities (to prove myself) but in Spain, with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, I’ve been able to show I’m good enough to play in a big European league.”
However, Forlan refused to rule out a move back to the Premier League in the future.
“Returning to England at some point?” he added.
”You never know your fate in the football planet. Who knows, within two years…But right now I’m very happy in Spain.”
