La Liga side Atletico Madrid are confident that Olympic Gold Medalist striker Sergio Aguero will stay at the Vicente Calderon, despite being linked with a big money move to the Premier League in January, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United all said to be interested in the forward.
20-year-old Aguero joined Atletico from Argentine giants Independiente in 2006, with the young striker breaking Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s record as the youngest player to play for the club aged 15. Scoring 23 goals in 53 games during three years at the Diablos Rojos, which saw him make the switch to La Liga in a deal worth €20million.
Representatives of City are due to go out and assess Aguero, with it understood that they are prepared to shatter the £32.5million that they paid Real Madrid for Robinho, to bring the striker to the Eastlands Stadium in January. With local rivals United also keen on the Argentine International along with Chelsea.
However, Aguero still has four-years to run on his current contract at the Vicente Calderon, with Los Colchoneros setting a buyout clause at €60million to warn off any potential suitors for the forward.
This fee would not represent a problem for the likes of United, City and Chelsea, but Atletico coach Javier Aguirre has revealed that Aguero is happy in Spain and that he believes the striker will do good things at the Madrid side since stepping out of the shadow of Fernando Torres.
“On the subject of him possibly leaving, he has a contract here, he is happy here and I'm sure that is going to want to stay,” said Aguirre.
“Sergio, I truly believe, is going to do very good things here.”
