Premiership Trio Chase QPR Striker

*

Premier League trio Fulham, Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion are all in the hunt to sign Dexter Blackstock at Championship side Queens Park Rangers, according to the Daily Mirror.

QPR’s West London neighbours Fulham are believed to be favourites to sign 22-year-old Blackstock, with the Cottagers understood to have sent scouts to watch the England Under-21 International in recent weeks. However, it is now understood that the Baggies and the Trotters are also keen to bring the former Southampton player to the Premiership.

The Super Hoops want Blackstock to commit his future to Loftus Road, but the striker is unsure as to whether to sign a new deal at QPR, which has alerted Bolton, West Brom and Fulham.

Blackstock has been at QPR since joining from the Saints in 2006 and has found the net 11 times this season, with The Hoops should they decide to let the forward leave ready to ask for as much as £4million for Blackstock, who was bought from Southampton by former manager Gary Waddock for £500,000.

If Carlsberg Made Referees........Part 1

*
The New Voice Of Football column at Footballfancast.com

While wondering how Ref-Cam would reflect on certain referees in ascertaining the ones that were competent from the ones that, well leave you scratching your head as to exactly what they saw that the rest of the world didn’t. I happened upon two refs that show the good and the dire in refereeing today.

The one that Carlsberg probably wouldn’t make is Stuart Attwell, who seems to have been fast-tracked into the higher reaches of the game fairly quickly and already has a string of howlers, Graham Poll would be proud of to his credit in his fledgling career as a referee to date.

Now every ref gets it wrong on occasion after all they are human like you and I, but Ref-Cam would show this Attwell to be as one fansite put it a “buffoon”. What does he see that everyone else doesn’t?

Attwell is the youngest ref to officiate in the Premier League at 25-years-old after being promoted to referee in the Football League at the start of the 2007/2008, season. A few good performances in the lower leagues and he was promoted to ref in the Championship later in the season.

Within six minutes of his first Championship game Sheffield United v Blackpool he sends Ian Evatt off for Blackpool for a professional foul on Billy Sharp and awarded a penalty to United. Replays show a good view for Attwell and no contact made by Evatt. Blackpool manager Simon Grayson didn’t question Attwell, but the Football League for putting the relatively inexperienced referee in charge of the game.

So everyone makes mistakes and this was his first big one in his debut season in the Football League. He went through the rest of the season without much incident apart from Swansea manager Roberto Martinez accusing Attwell of failing to control the players in their FA Cup tie against Havant & Waterlooville and even refereed the League 2 play-off final at Wembley.

The Football League, I’ll come back to them later promote him to the roster for the Premier League in this current season, which to say the least has left me gasping in sheer astonishment as to why this relatively young ref has been thrust into the limelight.

Not one, but three big occasions, where you just want to see what he saw or even gain the slightest bit of insight into how he reached the decision he did and were not even at Christmas yet.

On the 20th September Attwell gave Reading their ‘Ghost goal’ against Watford. The ball went four-yards wide the assistant flagged, Attwell thought the assistant was flagging for a corner or something else, which everyone else could see it was and then called Attwell over and said it was a goal. Attwell then gives it, much to the astonishment of everyone on the pitch, but especially the Reading dugout, who could hardly control their amusement.

Now while the assistant thought it was a goal and gave it as such. Surely Attwell as a ref has to be able to tell if the ball is in the net or not? After all this is probably one of the easier things to do as a ref. Being able to put yourself in a position to see if the ball is in the net. Not a goal-line clearance, just in the net or not. So while this is happening, what exactly is he looking at during that short period of time to not see if the ball was in or not?

No punishment though for getting something so easy so wrong. You see the Football League have plans for the “Buffoon” and have even blocked the showing of the ‘Ghost goal’ on you-tube, but you can get a great Chris Kamara version of events.

Six-weeks later in a local derby between Nottingham Forest and Derby he disallows two late Derby goals. The second one incensed Rams boss Paul Jewell, who is no stranger to stalking a referee after the game to have it out. However, on this occasion Jewell was right, Attwell had seen what no other had seen and decided to disallow it. He also booked 8 players and gave a straight red in what was considered to be not a dirty game by both sets of fans.

Attwell was hauled in by referees chief Keith Hackett this time and dropped from the fixtures the following week, but this didn’t mean a week ban for he was fourth official at the Hull v Bolton Premiership game.

Then last week in the Stoke v Fulham Premier League clash a cross comes in from Fulham that Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham sticks his arm out to and handballs, while also lurching with his head. A clear handball and penalty, but not given. Maybe Attwell was unsighted? Not at all, while Fulham protested he simply pointed to his head and reiterated that Higginbotham headed it. Ok fine maybe it was hard to tell after all his head was near the ball too. So why did the ball go backwards then? Arsenal legend Paul Merson summed this up best on Sky Sports, when he suggested that maybe Attwell thought that Higginbotham had his “head on back-to-front” to head in a totally unnatural direction. So what is Attwell seeing that no one else sees and how does he come to these bizarre decisions?

You would have thought that three howlers in as many months would see Attwell having to ref in the Blue Square Conference for a lengthy spell, but no. As I say the Football League have plans for what they perceive as the future of refereeing and have got him on to the FIFA roster. So its Champions League here I come for Attwell.

There have been other incidents involving Attwell in his short, but clanger-prone career. Now if there was, a way to see what he saw then we would all come to the conclusion that he is just not up to it. Perhaps promoted by the Football League too fast, but still not up to it nonetheless.

So the Premier League and now the Champions League and probably the World Cup at some point in the future, have ended up with a ref, who is a perfect example of how Ref-Cam would expose them for what they truly are, awful.

Spurs Leading Boro, Everton, Bolton, West Ham & Sunderland For Bullard?

*

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the chase for Fulham midfielder Jimmy Bullard, with a host of other Premier League clubs interested in the former Wigan Athletic player. Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough, Everton, Sunderland and West Ham United have also been linked with Bullard recently.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is said to be a big fan of the all-action midfielder, having seen Bullard close-up as a youngster, when Redknapp was in charge at West Ham. However, 29-year-old Bullard did not play a single senior game for the Hammers between 1999-2001 and made the switch to Peterborough United before joining the Latics in 2003 and then arriving at Craven Cottage in 2006.

After his arrival at the Cottagers, Bullard had to sit out most of his first season with the Cottagers due to a dislocated kneecap, which ruled him out for nine months. His return to the side towards the end of last season saw Fulham manage to avoid relegation on the last day of the campaign, with many thinking Roy Hodgson’s side were dead and buried weeks before.

Now a source close to Redknapp has claimed that the former Portsmouth manager is to make a move to bring Bullard to White Hart Lane in January. It is believed that Bullard is ready to quit Fulham in order to progress his career, with no shortage of suitors in the Premiership for the midfielder, who is valued at around £4million.

A source close to Redknapp told the News of the World: “Harry is an admirer of the boy and I’m sure will try to get him in January given the circumstances surrounding him.

“If the boy is ready to leave Fulham then Harry would have to be interested.”

Fulham v Middlesbrough Premier League Preview: Can Boro End 5-Game Winless Streak Against The Cottagers?

*

Fulham play Gareth Southgate’s Middlesbrough in the Premier League at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Roy Hodgson’s Fulham side go into this match unbeaten in their last five league outings, but 4 of those games have been draws, with the last win for the Cottagers coming against Tottenham Hotspur in November at home. Fulham are 10th in the Premier League and have only lost once at home all season in 8 matches, winning 5 and drawing the other 2 games.

Boro go into this clash on the back of a good 1-1 draw with Arsenal at the Riverside Stadium last week, but have not won in their last 5 Premiership matches, with 3 draws and defeats to Hull City and Bolton Wanderers. Southgate will be hoping that Middlesbrough can get back to winning ways at Craven Cottage on Saturday and start to climb from their 12th place in the table.

Fulham will be strikers Bobby Zamora (thigh) and Diomansy Kamara (knee) for the visit of Boro, while Andranik Teymourian (knee) and Seol Ki-Hyeon (knee) are also ruled out of this clash for the Cottagers.

Southgate is without summer signing Justin Hoyte (knee) and Rhys Williams (knee), with Gary O’Neill and striker Mido to face late fitness tests for hamstring injuries along with Andrew Taylor, who is struggling to shake off a knee injury in time for the trip to London.

Fulham, Spurs, Milan & Celtic To Fight It Out For Croatian International

*

Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle it out with Premier League rivals Fulham along with AC Milan and Celtic for Croatian International goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa, who id due to face Spurs when they play Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

29-year-old Pletikosa is the subject of interest of all four clubs, according to the keeper’s agent Mark Naletilic. With Naletilic also revealing that while enquiries have been made no firm offer has been made for Pletikosa, who is valued at £6.5million by Spartak.

“There are several interested clubs, but we are still at an early stage,” he told sportskenovosti.hr.

“Fulham is certainly among them, but the club have not yet submitted an official bid. Everything will depend on the price.

“Spartak are pleased with him, but they will not make things complicated if a real opportunity presents itself. Russians behave in the market, if a good offer arrives they do not stand in a player’s way.”

Naletilic went on to declare the interest from Celtic, while claiming that Tottenham were keen on Pletikosa to replace Heurelho Gomes, who has made a string of high-profile errors since his summer move to White Hart Lane from PSV Eindhoven.

Along with the interest from the Rossoneri, who while not dismissing a move to the San Siro highlighted the problem of the Serie A side having too many players from outside the EU in their squad.

“Contacts with Celtic are there from before, while Tottenham are interested due to the bad form of Heurelho Gomes,” he added.

“Milan also seek a goalkeeping solution, but there could be perhaps the problem of too many players from outside the EU. Everything is possible.”

Hodgson Concedes That Spurs, Arsenal & Liverpool Target Could Leave The Cottagers

*

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has admitted that it will be hard to hold on to defender Brede Hangeland in the January transfer window, should a big Premier League club come calling, with Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all reportedly linked with the Norwegian International.

27-year-old Hangeland joined Fulham in January from FC Copenhagen and has been a pivotal figure for the Cottagers in the Premiership this season. Hangeland has twice been voted Fulham’s Player of the Month this season, with his performances for the West London club attracting the interest of the Gunners and Spurs along with Rafa Benitez’s Reds team, who were linked with a move for Hangeland in 2007, while the Norwegian was at Copenhagen.

Hangeland cost Fulham just £2.5million, but despite Hodgson having no intention of letting the defender leave Craven Cottage. The former Inter Milan manager has conceded that if a “serious offer” should come in for the player, Fulham would have to give it consideration.

Hodgson told the press: “If a serious offer comes our way for Brede I'm pretty sure it'll have to be considered.

“When the day comes we'll have to take into account all the possibilities and probabilities and make a decision.

“But I would hope - and this might be a naive hope - that we could still keep him because he's got a long-term contract with us here.

“I know he's happy here and happy with his football, so hopefully it hasn't affected his thinking because I don't know what he reads into that type of speculation.”

However, Hodgson also revealed that while Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham have been linked with Hangeland in the press. There is still no indication that any of the trio are interested in the Norwegian captain.

“But at this stage we have absolutely no indication that Arsenal or any club of that stature are interested in Brede,” Hodgson added.

Liverpool Boss Benitez: New Deal "Could Be" Resolved By The End Of The Month

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez refused to be drawn on how negotiations are going on a new deal at Anfield, but indicated that “it could be” resolved by the end of the month.

Former Valencia coach Benitez revealed recently that talks were due to get underway regarding an extension to his current deal at the Merseyside Club, which runs out in 2010.

However, when asked about how close the talks were to a conclusion and the possibility of a resolution by the end of November, Benitez insisted that his focus was on the Reds Champions League clash against Marseille on Wednesday at Anfield.

Benitez replied: “It could be, but I prefer to concentrate on this game.”

Benitez also revealed that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, will be fit to face Marseille after missing the Premier League match with Fulham on Saturday with a groin injury. Benitez also believed that England International Gerrard could start and might even play the full 90 minutes.

Benitez added: “Gerrard has trained today so he is available. I think he would be fit to last 90 minutes if he needed to.

”It depends on the player, but he is fit and he can start if necessary and after that, it depends on how he is feeling during the game.”

Injury Blow For Spurs Boss Redknapp As Modric Ruled Out For Two Weeks

Tottenham Hotspur’s Croatian International Luka Modric has suffered a groin injury and will be missing from Harry Redknapp’s Spurs side for at least two-weeks.

23-year-old Modric, who was a £16.5million summer signing from Dinamo Zagreb was injured in the Premier League defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, where the Croatian playmaker was taken off at half-time.

Modric will now miss the Premiership matches at White Hart Lane against Blackburn Rovers and Everton as well as an away tie in the UEFA Cup against NEC Nijmegen. This will come as a blow to former Portsmouth boss Redknapp, who has pledged to build the team around Modric and will now have to do without the midfielder for this crucial series of games in the North London clubs season.

A statement on the club's official website read: “An MRI scan has revealed that Luka Modric has suffered a partially torn groin muscle. He was forced off with the injury at half-time in Saturday's match with Fulham and is expected to be sidelined for up to two weeks.”

Cesar: I Am The Solution For Tottenham's Goalkeeping Dilemma

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp is weighing up the options already at his disposal in the goalkeeper department at White Hart Lane following Brazilian International Heurelho Gomes’ latest blunder against Fulham in the Premier League clash at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

27-year-old Gomes (left) has made a string of high profile errors for Spurs since his summer transfer from Dutch Champions PSV Eindhoven, with Tottenham manager Redknapp now ready to look at alternatives to the Brazilian until a replacement can be found in the January transfer window.

Veteran goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez, who was also a summer signing for the North London club is one option. Cesar has plenty of top-level experience, having been capped for Spain and winning the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2002 and La Liga twice in 2001 and 2003 during five-years at the Bernabeu.

The 37-year-old has made one appearance for Spurs this season coming on for the injured Gomes in the 4-2 Carling Cup win over Liverpool last Wednesday, with the summer signing from Real Zaragoza claiming to be the solution to Redknapp’s problems between the posts at White Hart Lane.

“I am here as a solution for the coach,” Cesar said in Marca.

“Whether I play or not, I am not going to change; I will keep a smile on my face and be focused on my club duty. But, of course, I like to play.”

The other alternative to Redknapp is England Under-21 International Ben Alnwick, who has just returned to Tottenham after a loan spell at Carlisle United. 21-year-old Alnwick will be assessed by Redknapp before the Spurs boss decides whether to keep the former Sunderland keeper at White Hart Lane or send the young keeper back out on loan, with Carlisle manager Gregg Abbott keen to have Alnwick back at Brunton Park.

Redknapp will use the International break to have a good look at both Cesar and Alnwick, before deciding whether to persevere with Gomes or hand either veteran Cesar or youngster Alnwick the chance to prove themselves in the next Premiership match against Blackburn Rovers next Saturday.

Fulham v Spurs Premiership Preview: Can The Cottagers End The Redknapp Tottenham Honeymoon?

Fulham play, Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The Cottagers go into this clash on the back of a win against Newcastle United at home last weekend, but lost to Everton at Goodison Park the week before. Fulham have only been beaten by West Ham United at Craven Cottage, but their lack of a win on their travels sees the West London club in mid-table, with manager Roy Hodgson aware that Fulham must start to pick up points on the road as well as at home or possibly face a repeat of fighting for their Premiership survival again.

Spurs will go into this London derby full of confidence, with the North London club unbeaten since Redknapp took over at White Hart Lane. Wins against Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premiership along with a draw against Arsenal have seen Tottenham climb out of the relegation zone. With Spurs also beating Liverpool again 4-2 in the Carling Cup on Wednesday as the Redknapp revolution starts to gather pace at Tottenham.

Hodgson is unable to call on Seol Ki-Hyeon, summer signing Andranik Teymourian and Diomansy Kamara, who all have knee problems for the visit of Spurs. Jimmy Bullard is likely to partner captain Danny Murphy in the centre of midfield, with Andy Johnson and former Tottenham player Bobby Zamora set to lead the attack for the Cottagers.

As well as being on an unbeaten run at Tottenham, Redknapp also has a fully fit squad to choose from for the game with Fulham, with only keeper Heurelho Gomes a doubt after the Brazilian was stretchered off in the 4-2 win against Liverpool with a head injury.

One dilemma facing Redknapp is who to bring back in and who to leave out, with the former Portsmouth manager resting Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate, Luka Modric, Jermaine Jenas, David Bentley and 11-goal Darren Bent for the Carling Cup game. With summer signings Roman Pavlyuchenko and Fraizer Campbell both netting a brace against the Reds and Dawson looking assured in defence in a 4-4-2 formation, which worked just as effectively as the 4-5-1 system Redknapp has employed when Bent is in the team.

Fulham: (from) Schwarzer, Konchesky, Paintsil, Hangeland, Johnson, Zamora, Nevland, Gera, Stockdale, Murphy, Gray, Hughes, Zuberbuhler, Etuhu, Bullard, Stoor, Dempsey, Davies, Andreasen, Leijer, Milsom, Brown, Kallio, Baird, Smalling, Watts

Tottenham Hotspur: (from) Gomes, Hutton, Bale, Zokora, Bentley, Huddlestone, Lennon, Jenas, Pavlyuchenko, Bent, Gilberto, Stalteri, Modric, Ghaly, Gunter, Giovanni, Campbell, Taarabt, Dawson, Cesar, Corluka, Boateng, O’Hara, Assou-Ekotto, Rocha, Woodgate, Bostock, Dervite

Arsenal & Man United To Lock Horns Over Fulham Schoolboy Vose

Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United are both interested in Fulham schoolboy Dominic Vose, with the young midfielder already being dubbed the ‘New Paul Scholes’ in some corners for his goalscoring from midfield.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will run the rule over 15-year-old Vose at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground, with Wenger hoping that he can persuade the young starlet that the Emirates Stadium is the place where Vose will develop most as a footballer.

Vose spent his half-term break last week in Manchester, with United, manager Sir Alex Ferguson also keen to snatch up the midfielder and convince Vose that the Premiership Champions and Old Trafford is the right place for his footballing education.

Vose will not be able to sign his first professional contract until his 17th birthday, but should he choose to leave Craven Cottage to join Arsenal or the Red Devils, Fulham will almost certainly demand a huge amount of compensation from their Premier League rivals for their young prodigy
